This Spanish Language & History and Art Combination Program is a 4-week program combining intensive Spanish Language with studies in Spanish art, history, culture and civilization. The program aims to enrich participant's understanding of the language through a study of Spain's history and civilizations. Participants immerse in the language, improving their linguistic and communicative skills, and deepening their knowledge about Spain. It is designed for participants who have at least a high intermediate Spanish level.
For additional immersion in language and culture, after class workshops, 'intercambio' language exchange (Madrid), social activities and guided excursions are held at no additional cost. Designed to provide ample opportunity to use Spanish and be apart of a comprehensive learning experience. The overall aim of the program is to instill the linguistic, practical, and cultural aspects of the language as well as the Spanish way of life.

At the start of the program, participants are provided their class times. Classes are held everyday from Monday to Friday. Ninety percent of classes are held in the mornings; however, some classes are scheduled in the afternoons due to the number of participants and their Spanish levels. Each class is 55 minutes long with a 5 minute break.
SPANISH LANGUAGE CURRICULUM
The Language curriculum is based on the needs of high intermediate to advanced Spanish proficiency levels. Participants are at least in the high intermediate Spanish level and are able to converse on general topics, raise questions and express their viewpoints using complex sentence structures. Classes build on the advanced grammar and vocabulary, enabling participants to express themselves functionally in different contexts. Class work uses current Spanish events, civilization and literature to build vocabulary and provide a greater awareness of Spanish culture and society. Exercises such as presenting reports, commentaries, debates and speeches, are aimed at developing advanced writing styles and techniques, and building fluency in oral expression. A wide range of carefully selected advanced Spanish study materials are used. Modern teaching methods focus on instilling linguistic, practical, communicative, and cultural aspects of the language, as well as the Spanish way of life.
SPANISH HISTORY & ART CURRICULUM
The curriculum presents a comprehensive overview of Spanish History and Art. Students learn terminology commonly used in history and art. The course examines various periods in Spanish history, giving special attention to the influence of the Roman, Arabic and Hebrew civilizations on Spanish culture. Participants will study the unification of Spain during the reign of the Catholic Kings, follow Columbus’ voyage to the New World and examine the history of Hapsburg and Bourbon dynasties. The course also looks at the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Modernism civilizations and their influences on Spanish art. Students examine and analyze the paintings, architecture and sculptures of the principal Spanish artists throughout the history of art, including El Greco, Bosco, Goya, Velázquez, Picasso, Miró, and Dalí.

To further accelerate the participant's learning, culture classes are offered in the Intensive Plus, Super-Intensive and Part-Time courses. These culture classes encourage active participation and allow students to gain insight into Spanish Language in all its contexts. Class topics cover a variety of areas including cinema, art, civilization, history and literature.
Getting to know locals is an integral part of this program. It provides language and cultural interaction between non-Spanish and Spanish participants, marking the beginning of many lasting friendships. The program provides the perfect opportunity to practice the language and encourages cultural and social exchange. Participants schedule to meet with one another at their convenience. A wide range of activities with native speakers throughout the program provides further opportunities for immersion into the Spanish language and way of life.
Teachers are native Spanish and are highly qualified and experienced in teaching Spanish Language and History. They hold a degree in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and an additional degree in Spanish History. Up-to-date, carefully selected materials are used in class, giving participants valuable information on Spanish History and at the same time developing linguistic skills in the context of with modern day Spanish culture and life. Reference material, Conozca España, SGEL, Civilización Española, selected newspaper articles; various books on art, history and literature are also used.
To ensure a comprehensive learning experience, cultural and social activities and guided excursions are provided free of charge in the Total Program with admission and transportation included at no additional cost. These activities and excursions offer participants a deeper appreciation of Spain's rich and varied culture and traditions. The program and frequency of social and cultural activities held are varied and may include watching Flamenco performances, fiestas, guided visits to cultural and historical sites, museums, monuments, concerts, tapas parties and more. Participants' progress is assessed through continuous homework assignments and tests throughout the programs. A Diploma is awarded certifying the type of program; amount of hours studied and completed level of proficiency at the successful completion of the program. A transcript is also provided including a detailed account of the participant's progress according to specified linguistic skills. Participants may obtain credits to be transferred to their home college or university.
To cater to individual needs, a range of accommodation options located close to school is offered: Host Family, Student Residence, Shared Flats, Private Apartment or Hotel. Participants who have enrolled in the program are given details of the accommodation pre-departure. These include a description of the accommodation, the address, and the location in relation to the school.
