D.E.L.E Exam Preparation

AIM

This D.E.L.E Exam Preparation Program is specifically designed to prepare students to pass the D.E.L.E. examinations. There are three different D.E.L.E. diplomas corresponding to three levels of Spanish: Certificado Inicial (C.I.E.), Spanish Elementary Level Certificate; Diploma Basico (D.B.E.), Spanish Intermediate Level Diploma; and Diploma Superior (D.S.E), Spanish Advanced Level Diploma. This program has resulted in 100% pass rate for students from 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. The examinations are held in May, August and November, and the exact dates are released a month before the exams by Instituto Cervantes. Participants of this program may change to the Spanish Language Intensive Program (25 classes a week) if they do not have the necessary skills to pass the desired level. This program involves intense language classes and for additional immersion in language and culture, after class workshops are provided at no additional cost. Students are given ample opportunity to use Spanish and take part in a comprehensive learning experience. The overall aim of the program is to prepare students for the D.E.L.E examination, as well as instill the linguistic, practical, and cultural aspects of the language as well as the Spanish way of life.

PROGRAM CURRICULUM

The Spain D.E.L.E. Exam Preparation Program consists of:
20 Spanish Language classes devoted to D.E.L.E preparation
5 Spanish Culture Workshop classes per week.

Class Schedule:
Morning Language classes 09:30am to 13:30pm
Workshops 13:30pm to 14:30pm
Afternoon Language classes 15:30pm to 19:30pm


At the start of the program, participants are provided their class times. Classes are held everyday from Monday to Friday. Ninety percent of classes are held in the mornings, however, some classes are scheduled in the afternoons due to the number of participants their Spanish levels. Each class is 55 minutes long with a 5 minute break.


SPANISH LANGUAGE CURRICULUM



The language curriculum is based on the needs of all Spanish proficiency levels. This program is suitable for students who wish to prepare for and undertake the D.E.L.E. examinations for any of the three levels. Classes build on advanced grammar and vocabulary, enabling participants to express themselves functionally in different contexts, and are devoted to providing each participant with the skills needed to pass the D.E.L.E. examination. Class work focuses on Spanish current events, civilization and literature to build vocabulary and provide a greater awareness of Spanish culture and society. Exercises such as presenting reports, commentaries, debates and speeches, are aimed at building fluency in oral expression and developing advanced writing styles and techniques. A wide range of Spanish study materials used in class is specifically chosen to complement study for D.E.L.E. exam preparation. Modern teaching methods focus on instilling linguistic, practical, communicative, and cultural aspects of the language, as well as the Spanish way of life.


SPANISH CULTURE CLASSES

To further accelerate the participant's learning, culture classes are offered in the Intensive Plus, Super-Intensive and Part-Time courses. These culture classes encourage active participation and allow students to gain insight into Spanish Language in all its contexts. Class topics cover a variety of areas including cinema, art, civilization, history and literature.

PLACEMENT TEST


First participants are placed according to the proficiency level they indicate on the application form. At the start of the program, non-beginners take a written and oral placement test. Second placements are made according to the results of the placement test. Placement tests are held in the morning of the first Monday of the program. Classes start immediately after the test is completed.

CERTIFICATE AND PROFICIENCY LEVELS

The D.E.L.E Examination Preparation program is divided into three proficiency levels. Students will be placed in their appropriate level (see above).

  • Certificado Inicial": Elementary Spanish Language Certificate
    This level is for those who have learned Spanish, and are able to communicate effectively at an elementary level. Classes focus on improving participants' vocabulary, syntax, listening, reading, and speaking skills in preparation for the examination. The Certificado Inicial examination consists of five components: reading comprehension, written expression, auditory understanding, grammar and vocabulary, and oral expression. The course focuses on these particular areas of the language, to assist and prepare the students for the elementary level D.E.L.E exam. Class materials cover topics on Spanish culture and society and participants are encouraged to converse on daily topics and express themselves using elementary sentence structures.

  • Diploma Basico": Intermediate Spanish Langugae Diploma
    This level is for those who are able to converse on general topics and express themselves using elementary Spanish. Students require sufficient linguistic capabilities to communicate effectively in daily situations, and in normal communicative situations that do not require a specialized use of the language. The Certificado Basico examination consists of five components: reading comprehension, written expression, auditory understanding, grammar and vocabulary, and oral expression. The course focuses on these particular areas of the language to prepare students for the intermediate level D.E.L.E exam. Classes improve grammar and vocabulary, enabling participants to communicate functionally in different contexts. Class topics cover Spanish current events, civilization, and literature in order to build vocabulary and provide a greater awareness of Spanish culture and society. Emphasis is placed on participants' writing, oral expression, and listening comprehension skills.

  • Diploma Superior": Advanced Spanish Language Diploma
    This level is for those who can discuss general topics, raise complex questions, and express their opinions clearly using correct pronunciation. Participants can express themselves systematically using appropriate expressions and language norms. Students require the linguistic capabilities necessary to communicate effectively in situations that require an advanced level of the Spanish language and knowledge of the Spanish culture. The Diploma Superior examination consists of five components: reading comprehension, written expression, auditory understanding, grammar and vocabulary, and oral expression. The course focuses on these particular areas of the language prepare students for the advanced level D.E.L.E exam. The curriculum focuses on enabling participants to communicate effectively using complex sentence structures. Course literature includes Spanish non-fiction and articles. Advanced writing and oral expression styles and techniques are used to improve writing skills and provide oral expression fluency. Class exercises include commentaries and essays to improve written expression, and exercises in speech making and debates to build fluency in oral expression.

INTERCAMBIO LANGUAGE EXCHANGE (Madrid & Barcelona)

Getting to know locals is an integral part of this program. It provides language and cultural interaction between non-Spanish and Spanish participants, marking the beginning of many lasting friendships. The program provides the perfect opportunity to practice the language and encourages cultural and social exchange. Participants schedule to meet with one another at their convenience. A wide range of activities with native speakers throughout the program provides further opportunities for immersion into the Spanish language and way of life.


TEACHERS & TEACHING MATERIALS

Teachers are native Spaniards and highly qualified and experienced in teaching Spanish. They hold a degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language and additional degrees in specific areas, for example, Spanish philology, history, marketing, and tourism. The materials used in class have been published specifically for complementary preparation of the examinations. These preparation notes should resolve any questions that arise during the development of the course. Students are given a wide range of communicative situations within the cultural context. Participants are given valuable information on modern-day Spanish culture and society while developing their language and communication skills.


ASSESSMENT

Participants' progress is continuously assessed through homework, assignments, a midterm and final examination. Class attendance is obligatory. A Diploma is awarded certifying the type of program; amount of hours studied and completed level of proficiency at the successful completion of the program. A transcript is also provided including a detailed account of the participant's progress according to specified linguistic skills. Participants may obtain credits to be transferred to their home college or university.


ACCOMMODATION

To cater for individual needs, a range of accommodation options located close to school is offered: Host Family, Student Residence, Shared Flats, Private Apartment or Hotel. Participants who have enrolled in the program are given details of the accommodation pre-departure. These include a description of the accommodation, the address, and the location in relation to the school.

Past participants have been awarded US credit transfers after completing this program. Participants are required to contact the Study Abroad Advisor or Spanish Language Department in their home college or university regarding the procedures for academic transfer. ARRIVAL TRANSFER
